CITRART
As a mixed media artist and workshop instructor, my favorite question is “what if?”  Now that I think of it, perhaps that has always been my favorite question, accounting for the prairie dog rescue fiasco (they bite!), the laundry room chemical mixing mishap, the incident involving dam flood gates and my short swim, and other creative adventures from which my Mom is probably still recovering.
My artistic experiments are not as harrowing, but they are every bit as compelling and exciting.  I am less and less attached to the product, and more and more interested in the process.  When I allow my mind to open up to possibilities, to the creative energy in the universe, my results are far more satisfying than when I try to “make” something happen.
I love to explore artistic techniques by taking them one step further, pushing the limit.  This “what iffing” mindset combined with a process of altering papers with Citrasolv is what led to the discovery of my “Citrart”.
All you need is some old newspapers, Citrasolv concentrate (orange or lavender, your fav), old National Geographic magazines, a brush or spritzer, and paper towels.
Cover you table with newspaper…this gets messy!  Brush or spray all the pages in the magazine with Citrasolv.  Squish closed and wait 10-15 minutes.  Squish again…icky black ink will come out.  Mop up with paper towels.  Tear out the pages which will be weird and wonderful.  No original image will remain, just cool shapes, colors and designs!
You can use these papers for collage or paint back into them with acrylic paints and inks and gel pens.
You can remove more ink with a Qtip coated with Citrasolv to create faces, clouds, waterfalls etc.
Check out the gallery! Use your imagination!  For detailed information on this technique, read my article in my very favorite mixed media magazine, Cloth Paper Scissors Jan/Feb 2010 issue.  Also go to clothpaperscissors.com for online extras!

Glues for Multi-Media Art Work

As a general rule of thumb, I have found that the "weight" of the adhesive should get thicker as the paper you are aiming to glue gets thicker. I recommend (as always) Golden Acrylic mediums for the job. "YES" glue tends to have a long "open time" meaning it never ever seems to want to dry and PVA is a little too delicate for MM collage work.

For thin papers like magazines, try Matte or Gloss medium (the thinest adhesive)

For thicker papers like vellum or an envelope, try Matte or Gloss Gel Medium (slightly thicker and comes in a tub)

For thick papers like cardboard, try Soft Gel Gloss or Heavy Gel Medium

For wood or metal objects, try Extra Heavy Gel Medium
a metal washer stuck to a canvas - use  the Extra Heavy Gel medium.

Copy Transfer with the Chartpak Marker Blender Pen*

Chartpak Marker Blender pens are made to do just that - blend the colours of the markers when you are creating with the Chartpak markers!
For the "altering type" they provide a way to get an image into a book or onto an object that you can't feed into a copier. They are convenient to take to workshops, but they are smelly. Work in a well-ventilated place if you are sensitive to solvents. (Um, personally, I like the smell....!) Xylene is the solvent in the Chartpak Marker Blender which allows you to transfer the image. Many other solvents will work. Calligraphers will prefer solvents that leave no residue so they may write on the surface after transferring, and xylene leaves no residue.

Use on bling... just go over the bling

Color eyelets - put them in a small bag or saran wrap with the alcohol inks

Lights and brights Alcohol Inks - Tim Holtz

Also need:
Glossy Clay Coated Paper by Ranger
Can of Air

Then stamp with Archival Ink - since it's oil based it won't react with the background

Rock Candy Crackle by Ranger - Tim Holtz

This is different than crackle accent - the accent line is designed to be put on thicker, takes 4 hours to dry........ Rock candy dries quickly and dries to a thin, fine, porcelain crackle. Let it air dry....... if you really need to speed it up, wait until it starts to crackle.

Can work distress ink on top of it when dry

It's flexible so it won't chip off

Spellbinder Die Compatibility Sandwiches Updated

The new Magnetic Placement Mat will work in the Cuttlebug, but you will need an additional white spacer plate to accomodate for the added thickness.

The Magnetic Placement Mat is an ultra-thin layer, much thinner than the xyron magnetic pads I made to store my Spellbinders dies in. See this post for my storage examples. It is important to me that I always research any idea that hits my brain and so I did try those mats in my Wizard and found that they did indeed hold the dies in place. But after several uses the die shapes were "embedded" in the magnetic pad I had made. I don't know what the outcome of this will be after repeated use, but I wanted to let you know that initially this does work. Unfortunately the depth of my magnetic "creation" is too deep to use in other machines without creating significant snapping and popping. In comparison the Spellbinders Magnetic Placement Mat retains its original shape much better than my homemade version.

One thing I did notice is that the Magnetic Placement Mat is larger in size than the White Spacer Plates. Therefore where the Magnetic Mat extends over the edge of the White Spacer Plate I made quit an indentation in my Mat right at the edge where it extended over the Plate. So I trimmed my Magnetic Placement Mat using my Carl Cutter to be the exact same size as my Spacer Plate - problem solved.

In the following Compatibility Sandwiches the products listed below are referred to repeatedly - I thought I would link you to these items to help you gain a better understanding of what they are.

•Spellbinders™ Magnetic Placement Mat
•Spellbinders™ White Spacer plate
•Spellbinders™ Tan Emboss Mat
•Spellbinders™ Dies
•Spellbinders™ Dies also include the Nestabilities

Most directions below recommend that the Spellbinder™ dies be placed on your work surface blade side up. Be certain to check your machine sandwich before cutting to ensure correct usage.

All recipes are placed in stacking order starting at the bottom moving upwards. After cutting do not remove paper from die to emboss, proceed with paper remaining in die.

Cuttlebug™
This machine is capable of cutting and embossing any Spellbinders™ die. I can not guarantee that the B plates will not break in the Cuttlebug, but when testing my B plates were fine. They did make that ever present cracking noise though and therefore my hesitancy to say that they will never break being I have broken many B plates over the last few months. I do plan on testing the Spellbinders Thick White Mats and the Blue Mats included in the Wizard Charm Embossing Kits to see whether I can find an alternative to the acrylic plates. The white and blue mats provided by Spellbinders are so much sturdier.
